As we finished our last day of Stakeholder Managment today, our breaks were consumed by watching the opening ceremonies of the Olympics. Everyone cheered as countries represented in our class marched in. What fun–I can’t wait for the competitive rivalries to start once the events get going. I was proud to learn that Rice isContinue reading “The Olympics Have Begun!”

Career Strategy Update: Objective and Industries
Following is another email that I just sent my Career Board today: First, let me elaborate a little on my objective (Change the world through business leadership!) because I know it sounds cheesy. The premise is pretty simple: governments and NGOs are just some of the parties that can address some of the major challengesContinue reading “Career Strategy Update: Objective and Industries”
My Career
With less than four months (Yikes! How did it pass so quickly?!) left on the program, our thoughts have turned toward our post-IMD careers. Many of us are looking to continue paths that we already started, many are looking for radical changes, and many are seeking something in between. As this is an integral partContinue reading “My Career”
Allez Suisse!
We have spent the past three days in a negotiation workshop run by CM Partners. It was a great experience studying frameworks for analysis of one-on-one and multi-party negotiations. These frameworks are useful for advance preparation as well as mindfulness in the moment. The goal throughout our simulated negotiations was understanding each party’s interests inContinue reading “Allez Suisse!”
Crisis Management
Today we finished a day and a half of training in crisis management. We began with a simulation. In each group we were given very little information about our company, told that we were in charge, and then BAM, the crisis started. We began receiving telephone calls from employees about chemical leakage from our plant.Continue reading “Crisis Management”
Back in Lausanne
After three glorious days in San Menaio, a small town on Italy’s Adriatic coast, I am back in Lausanne. San Menaio was wonderful, as it always is: no Internet, no work, just peaceful beach life with my Italian cousins. The Italian side of my family is always incredibly welcoming and accommodating in their little beachContinue reading “Back in Lausanne”
Living in Lausanne
I haven’t posted in awhile. This is not because I have been under major deadline pressure, my traditional reason for latent posts. Rather it is because I spent the last week just living a normal life in Lausanne. There hasn’t been anything too extraordinary to report, the weather has been beautiful, and just poking aroundContinue reading “Living in Lausanne”
Back in Switzerland
After an excellent weekend in the south of France (capped off with an exquisite multi-hour bouillabaise dinner) I am back in Lausanne. It’s good to be home and I look forward to a week of career-oriented (but deadline-free!) productivity.
Back in the Developed World
Wow. I’m back. I am most definitely in a different world. We arrived this morning to shining sun and the smells of wonderful cuisine emanating from the outdoor cafes by the train station. Never before has Lausanne felt so European to me. This is how I remember my time in bella Firenze. Several of usContinue reading “Back in the Developed World”
The Poorest of the Poor
Wow, today was intense. We began with a trip into the heart of Korogocha, one of Africa’s largest (~400k people, but no one really knows how many) slums. As we bussed in, many had to close their windows as the stench was revolting. We caused quite a spectacle traveling along the narrow, make-shift streets asContinue reading “The Poorest of the Poor”
